Dense families, slow news, false friends, and weekly speaking — the Spanish stuck-zone playbook.

The plateau playbook

  1. Stop collecting random word lists. Build families: spect, port, duc, pon, mit. Revisit each family until you can invent two sentences without peeking.
  2. Add slow news weekly, then graduate headlines toward El País or a regional paper you care about.
  3. Book speaking time (italki or a local tutor) — reading alone will not finish B2. One 30-minute session beats four silent grammar PDFs.
  4. Run false-friend quizzes and conjugation tables on the verbs that keep collapsing in speech.

A realistic weekly rhythm

  • 3× roots/cloze — Explorer or cloze, 15 minutes.
  • 2× listening — slow news or intermediate podcasts, then one harder native clip with a transcript.
  • 1× output — tutor, language exchange, or a voice note to yourself summarizing what you heard.
  • 1× reading — graded article → short native opinion piece; jot two useful phrases into a family.

A solid practice day

Finish one denser listening or reading piece, invent three sentences that could show up at work or school, and record a short spoken retell. If you cannot finish the input, step down one difficulty rung — don’t restart an easier course for comfort. Note whether the bottleneck was vocabulary, grammar frames, or willingness to speak. Repeat this pattern on three weekdays before stacking new resources.
