Study hub

Honest start

Pick European or Brazilian audio and keep it for a month. Spanish cognates accelerate reading and sabotage pronunciation — keep a false-friend sticky note.

Month plan (A1–B1)

  1. First 500 + graded listening in your chosen variety.
  2. Explorer families for Romance cognates you will actually say.
  3. Weekly speaking; correct Spanish bleed in real time.
  4. At B2+, open the Portuguese C1 path for register and collocations.

Advanced bridge

Use register, workplace, and collocations. Mirror output models from Spanish/French when you need structure, then rewrite into Portuguese register.

Daily 25-minute template

  1. 5 min — script or pronunciation warm-up.
  2. 10 min — First 500 or topic deck.
  3. 10 min — listening you finish + 30-second retell.

Resource use on this site

Start with one free course from the list below, one listening habit, and one reference. Use on-site tools linked above. Ignore the rest of the directory until those three habits are alive for two weeks.

Progress checks

  • Can you decode the script without romanization?
  • Can you finish a graded clip and retell three facts?
  • Have you spoken — even badly — four times this month?

A solid practice day

Pick five high-frequency words or phrases, say one sentence with each aloud, finish a short graded clip that might contain them, and write a brief diary line. If the clip is too hard, step down one level — don’t open another app.

Portugal, Brazil, and other Portuguese

European Portuguese (Portugal) and Brazilian Portuguese are mutually readable with effort, but sound and some grammar diverge enough that you should pick a speaking target early.

  • Pronunciation: European Portuguese reduces unstressed vowels and can sound “closed” to Brazilian ears. Brazilian Portuguese is more open and syllable-timed — usually easier for English speakers to start hearing.
  • Gerund vs infinitive: Brazil favors progressive estar + -ndo (estou falando). Portugal often uses estar a + infinitive (estou a falar).
  • Pronouns & placement: Object pronouns and clitic placement differ in writing and speech; Brazilian media is more forgiving of spoken-style placement.
  • Vocabulary: Everyday swaps include autocarro/ônibus, comboio/trem, pequeno-almoço/café da manhã, plus many false friends between the two.
  • Africa & elsewhere: Portuguese in Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde has its own rhythms and loanwords; learners usually start from EP or BP materials, then add local media.

Choose Brazil or Portugal for tutors and listening, keep reading both, and do not treat the other variety as “wrong” — mark it as a parallel standard.

About Portuguese

Language family
Indo-European, Italic, Romance (Ibero-Romance)
Where it's spoken
Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor
Speakers
roughly 260 million speakers worldwide
Writing
Latin

Portuguese emerged alongside Spanish from Latin in the Iberian Peninsula and spread globally during the Age of Exploration, when Portuguese sailors established trade routes and colonies across Africa, Asia, and South America. Brazil is now home to the large majority of Portuguese speakers. It is close enough to Spanish that literate speakers of one can often read the other, though the spoken forms diverge more.

Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.
