Spanish A1–A2 path: a worked beginner month
A concrete four-week Spanish beginner plan with roots, graded listening, First 500 words, and a weekly assessed task.
Who this month is for
You can say hola and maybe order coffee, or you are starting from zero. You want a plan that produces comprehension and a few honest sentences — not another streak that evaporates when the app changes its tree.
This path assumes English as your base. If you already speak another Romance language, keep the same rhythm but expect cognates to accelerate recognition; still invent your own sentences so production catches up.
The spine of the month
Four ingredients, every week:
- Root families — two or three productive Latin stems in the Explorer (start with dict, voc, scrib).
- First 500 — recognition first, then write-from-memory rounds in First 500 Spanish.
- Graded listening — Dreaming Spanish Super Beginner / Beginner or similar; finish clips, do not binge.
- One free drill backbone — FSI / Live Lingua Spanish Basic when you want audio repetition without a subscription.
Book pairing: Language Hacks Spanish densifies the same families. Apps (Babbel, Pimsleur) can support speaking — they are not the plan.
Week-by-week plan
Week 1 · Sound and survival
- Explorer: dict family — decir, diccionario, dictado, predicción. Invent one sentence per member aloud.
- First 500: cards 1–80; mark five that appear in your listening.
- Listening: 15 minutes Super Beginner daily; retell one clip in three English sentences, then try two Spanish words you remember.
- Trap to avoid: typing every unknown word into a translator mid-clip. Finish first, harvest three words after.
Week 2 · Verb skeletons
- Explorer: voc and scrib — voz, vocabulario, escribir, descripción.
- Add present-tense anchors for ser/estar/tener/ir with Conjugation Explorer — five forms you will actually say.
- First 500: through ~160; write five micro-sentences from memory twice this week.
- Listening: stay graded; when a clip feels easy, raise one level, not three.
Week 3 · Sentences that travel
- Reuse week 1–2 families in new contexts (travel, food, classroom).
- Topic deck: one topic deck session for food or directions.
- Record a 45-second voice note describing your day with at least six First-500 words.
- Optional tutor: 20 minutes of survival dialogues — correction welcome, perfection not required.
Week 4 · Integration
- Re-listen to two early clips without subtitles; note what is suddenly clear.
- Write a 60-word paragraph about your week using three root-family members.
- Skim the Dreaming Spanish and FSI reviews so you know why those tools are on the path.
- Decide B1 readiness honestly: if graded beginner video is still hard, repeat weeks 2–3 before climbing.
Daily 25-minute template
- 3 min — review yesterday’s three words aloud.
- 10 min — Explorer family or First 500 quiz.
- 12 min — graded listening + 30-second spoken retell (English OK at first).
Miss a day? Restart with listening only. Do not build a shame backlog.
Spanish-specific beginner traps
- Ser vs estar panic — learn five high-frequency frames (es médico / está cansado / está en Madrid) before theory essays.
- Gender guessing from English — when unsure, learn noun+article as a chunk (la leche, el problema).
- Skipping listening because pronunciation feels hard — pronunciation improves from input you finish, not from waiting.
- Collecting 200 Anki cards on day three — ten honest cards beat a graveyard deck; see our Anki review.
Assessed task · Week-4 micro paragraph
Write 60–80 words in Spanish about your last seven days. Use at least two words from the dict or voc family and three First-500 verbs. Mistakes are fine; finish the text.
Model answer
Esta semana trabajé y estudié español por la noche. Escuché videos fáciles y escribí palabras nuevas en mi cuaderno. Mi diccionario ayuda cuando no sé una voz. Quiero hablar más la próxima semana.

What “done with A2” looks like here
You finish beginner graded video without constant pause. You can invent simple sentences from three root families without looking them up. You have spoken — even badly — at least four times in the month. Then move to the B1–B2 plateau guide or the Spanish B1–B2 path.
Study notes and next steps
Return to this page weekly. Tools change behavior only when you reuse phrases in your own messages. Keep a small notebook of openings, hedges, and collocations that survived real use.

If you teach, skim the teachers hub and the warmup sequence. If you are building a program outline, see schools & programs for a sample content week (licensing is separate).
Consistency rule: one finished loop beats three half-started apps. When in doubt, do the assessed task at the bottom of the matching guide and self-score with the four-point rubric (task, register, collocation, control).
Self-score rubric (every Friday)
- Task (0–2) — answered the brief completely
- Register (0–2) — formality matches the situation
- Collocation / connectors (0–2) — natural glue, not calques
- Control (0–2) — forms stable under time pressure
Aim for 6/8 before increasing difficulty. Below 4/8: repeat the same brief once — do not add new apps.

Worked cycle 1
Complete one media or reading input, one production task with model compare, and one register sprint. Write down a single phrase you will reuse in a real message this week. If you skip the reuse step, the cycle does not count.
Time-box: twelve minutes to draft, three minutes to edit for register only. Speak the final version once. If speech and writing disagree, simplify the written text until both match.
Annotated beginner week
Mon: dict family aloud. Tue: First 500 quiz 1–80. Wed: Super Beginner clip finished + three-fact retell in English then two Spanish words. Thu: voc/scrib families. Fri: write 60 words about the week using two family members. Weekend: optional music only — no guilt drills.
Success looks like finished clips, not streak badges. If a video needs constant pausing, stay on that level another week.
Beginner checkpoint: invent three spoken sentences from today’s family, then listen once more without subtitles. If you freeze completely, keep the family another day before adding new roots.

FAQ
- How many minutes a day for A1 Spanish?
- Twenty-five focused minutes most days beats a two-hour Sunday binge. Pair ten minutes of roots or First 500 with fifteen minutes of graded listening you can finish.
- Should beginners use Duolingo?
- As a warm-up only. Build the spine with graded listening, a free drill course (FSI/Live Lingua), and root families so words have a home.
