FSI Spanish Basic

Best free structured drill course if you will actually say the lines out loud — dated tone, still unmatched price.

Version tested: Public-domain FSI Basic materials via Live Lingua / archive mirrors (2026).

Time on tool: Multiple units used as a spoken drill backbone beside graded video and root practice.

What it does well

  • Clear audio + repeat-after-me structure that forces production, not only recognition.
  • Completely free and legal to download — no subscription cliff.
  • Dense enough to carry a beginner through months of grammar and high-frequency patterns.

Where it falls short

  • Diplomatic-era Spanish and classroom formality that can feel stiff next to modern YouTube teachers.
  • Little comprehensible-input storytelling — it drills; it does not entertain.
  • Easy to read silently and skip the hard part (speaking).

Compare with

Stronger for structured output than Dreaming Spanish; weaker as a sole diet. Pair FSI drills with graded input from the Spanish resource list, and with roots from the Explorer so vocabulary has a home.

Verdict

Use 20–30 minutes of spoken FSI drills most weekdays if you like structure. Skip it if you will only skim PDFs. Never make it your only Spanish — add listening people made this decade.
