Slovak and Czech are close enough that the two functioned as joint public languages for most of the 20th century within Czechoslovakia, and fluent passive understanding between speakers remains common today. Slovak preserves some older Slavic grammatical features that Czech has simplified. The modern written standard was codified in the mid-19th century as part of a broader Slavic national-revival movement across Central Europe.
