Polish belongs to the West Slavic branch alongside Czech and Slovak, sharing much of its core vocabulary and grammar with them despite centuries of separate political history. It retains nasal vowels lost in most other Slavic languages and a famously dense consonant-cluster spelling system, both holdovers from older Slavic sound patterns. Poland's repeated partitions and border shifts over the last three centuries make the language a strong marker of national identity.
