Honest start

Hangul pays rent immediately — learn it in week one with the script trainer. Then First 500 + speech. Do not hide in romanization for a month.

Four-week spine

  1. Hangul mastery + pronunciation basics.
  2. First 500 recognition + 10 spoken sentences/day.
  3. Graded listening finish lines; particle frames in speech.
  4. Politeness levels: formal vs polite informal — five reusable openers.

Traps

  • Romanization comfort forever.
  • Grammar PDFs without talking.
  • K-drama binge as the only input.
  • Ignoring speech levels until embarrassment forces a rewrite.

Daily 25-minute template

  1. 5 min — script or pronunciation warm-up.
  2. 10 min — First 500 or topic deck.
  3. 10 min — listening you finish + 30-second retell.

Resource use on this site

Start with one free course from the list below, one listening habit, and one reference. Use on-site tools linked above. Ignore the rest of the directory until those three habits are alive for two weeks.

Progress checks

  • Can you decode the script without romanization?
  • Can you finish a graded clip and retell three facts?
  • Have you spoken — even badly — four times this month?

A solid practice day

Pick five high-frequency words or phrases, say one sentence with each aloud, finish a short graded clip that might contain them, and write a brief diary line. If the clip is too hard, step down one level — don’t open another app.

Hangul

Korean is the sole well-established member of the Koreanic family; proposed links to Japanese or to the broader 'Altaic' grouping remain unproven and are not widely accepted among linguists. Its modern alphabet, Hangul, was created under King Sejong in 1443 specifically to give ordinary people an easier way to read and write than the Chinese characters used until then. Centuries of Chinese contact still left a large layer of Sino-Korean vocabulary in the language.

Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.

  3. Bookmark one dictionary or grammar reference and look up every unknown word for a week.

  5. Drill vocabulary with First 500 words , then situational lists in topic decks .

About the word-roots method here

Hangul first. Sino-Korean vocabulary has family structure; everyday Korean is not a cognate bridge from English the way Spanish is.
