Czech and Slovak are close enough to have functioned as a shared literary and broadcast language for much of the 20th century under Czechoslovakia, and speakers of each can generally still understand the other today. Czech retains a rich case system and famously long consonant clusters with few vowels, as in the tongue-twister 'strč prst skrz krk.' The written standard was substantially shaped during a 19th-century national revival movement.
