Honest start: diglossia first

Decide your speaking target dialect (or MSA-only reading path) in week one. MSA for reading/news; a dialect for conversation. Mixing goals randomly wastes months.

Month plan

1. Script trainer + connected letter recognition.
2. High-frequency MSA survival + audio you finish.
3. If speaking dialect: add a beginner dialect course while keeping MSA reading short.
4. One reference dictionary habit; look up every unknown for a week.

Daily 25-minute template

1. 5 min — script or pronunciation warm-up.
2. 10 min — First 500 or topic deck.

• Can you decode the script without romanization?
• Can you finish a graded clip and retell three facts?

A solid practice day

Pick five high-frequency words or phrases, say one sentence with each aloud, finish a short graded clip that might contain them, and write a brief diary line. If the clip is too hard, step down one level — don’t open another app.

MSA and spoken dialects

Arabic learners meet two layers at once: a shared written standard and everyday spoken dialects that can differ as much as separate Romance languages.

• Modern Standard Arabic (MSA / Fusḥā): News, formal writing, most textbooks, and exams. Excellent for reading and pan-Arab media; not how friends chat at home.
• Egyptian: Widely understood from film and TV. Common first dialect for learners who want spoken fluency fast.
• Levantine (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine): Popular in tutoring markets; clear for many learners; soft mutual intelligibility with Egyptian.
• Gulf & Maghrebi: Gulf dialects are growing in media; Maghrebi (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) can be harder for MSA-only learners because of Berber and French influence and faster reductions.

Practical path: learn MSA for literacy and news, pick one dialect for conversation, and treat other dialects as listening stretch goals — not as proof you “failed” Arabic.
