Honest start

Learn the script early (and know what niqqud is even if you drop it later). Decide modern Israeli Hebrew vs liturgical reading — different materials.

Month plan

  1. Script trainer + print decoding.
  2. Beginner course + daily short audio.
  3. First 500 recognition; write five micro-sentences.
  4. One speaking appointment; accept messy gender/number agreement.

Traps

  • Skipping script because vowels feel scary.
  • Mixing Biblical and modern goals in week one.
  • Apps without real audio finish lines.

Daily 25-minute template

  1. 5 min — script or pronunciation warm-up.
  2. 10 min — First 500 or topic deck.
  3. 10 min — listening you finish + 30-second retell.

Resource use on this site

Start with one free course from the list below, one listening habit, and one reference. Use on-site tools linked above. Ignore the rest of the directory until those three habits are alive for two weeks.

Progress checks

  • Can you decode the script without romanization?
  • Can you finish a graded clip and retell three facts?
  • Have you spoken — even badly — four times this month?

A solid practice day

Pick five high-frequency words or phrases, say one sentence with each aloud, finish a short graded clip that might contain them, and write a brief diary line. If the clip is too hard, step down one level — don’t open another app.

Hebrew

Hebrew is one of language revival's best-documented cases: after functioning mainly as a liturgical and literary language for close to 1,700 years, it was deliberately revived as an everyday spoken language beginning in the late 19th century, led by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda and the early Zionist movement. It shares Semitic root-and-pattern grammar with Arabic and Aramaic. Modern Hebrew borrows vocabulary from Yiddish, Arabic, Russian, and English while keeping its biblical grammatical core.

Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.

About the word-roots method here

Semitic triliteral (and related) roots are a genuine morphological system — a strong fit for root-family study, different in kind from Romance cognates.
