C1–C2 mastery

Native input, tone/register packs, domain months, formal↔informal rewrites.

What to do this month

  1. Native input: CCTV / news radio / longform reading — then rewrite formal↔informal.
  2. Drill Mandarin tone/register (politeness levels, written vs spoken).
  3. DLI GLOSS Mandarin for advanced structured lessons; specialize one domain for a month.
  4. Treat character components as a precision tool for opaque advanced vocabulary.

A realistic weekly rhythm

  • Native media daily; structured register or GLOSS work twice a week.
  • One domain focus for the month so advanced vocabulary clusters instead of scattering.

Keep sessions short enough to finish. A twenty-five minute loop you repeat beats a two-hour Sunday binge you abandon. If a day collapses, restart with listening only — do not punish yourself with a backlog.

Mandarin-specific traps

  • Only passive CCTV.
  • Ignoring politeness levels in writing.
  • Rare chengyu flex without workplace phrases.
  • No domain focus.

Media choice this month

CCTV/radio shorts with retell + rewrite.

Output task

Polite requests/refusals; register pack; monthly domain notebook.

Advanced Mandarin is register and component precision — treat characters like tools, not trophies.

Politeness ladder

Blunt → 请问 → written 您好 each week.

Components

Five characters deep > fifty shallow.

Domain month

Workplace, media, or academic only.

Politeness levels, written vs spoken choices, component precision — not Latin-style cognate roots.

Formal: 不好意思,这个周末我已经有安排,恐怕没办法参加。如果我们能改到下周,我很乐意支持。
Casual: 这周实在排不开,下周我来帮忙可以吗?

A solid practice day

Do three things: listen to or read something and retell it in your own words; write or speak one real-world task and compare it with a model; run a short register or collocation drill. Score yourself on task completion, register, discourse markers, and control. Under 4 out of 8? Repeat the same brief before making it harder. Keep useful phrases in a notebook by situation — emails, meetings, complaints — so the drills show up in messages you actually send.

When tones slip on high-frequency verbs, record ten sentences and re-speak only the verbs. When characters pile up, cut new ones and deepen components for a week. When listening feels fake, use the fifteen-minute listen guide and retell out loud. When speaking stalls, book a short tutor session even if the grammar still feels messy.
