Mandarin advanced: tone, register, and character-family precision
An advanced Mandarin path using tone/register drills, character components, domain focus, and formal↔informal rewrite practice.
Advanced Mandarin is register + precision
Tones still matter, but C1-like work also needs politeness levels, written vs spoken choices, and domain vocabulary that clusters for a month.
Weekly system
- Native short news / podcast segment daily
- Tone/register pack twice weekly
- Character-family precision in Explorer for opaque advanced words
- One formal↔informal rewrite weekly
- DLI GLOSS Mandarin for structured advanced lessons
Domain month
Choose workplace, media, or academic reading. Keep a phrase notebook of polite requests, soft refusals, and written email openings. Record yourself weekly; tone errors on high-frequency verbs cost more than rare nouns.
Assessed task · Polite refusal
Write a short message declining a weekend work request while staying collaborative; then rewrite it more casually for a close colleague.
Model answer
Formal: 不好意思,这个周末我已经有安排,恐怕没办法参加。如果我们能改到下周,我很乐意支持。 Casual: 这周实在排不开,下周我来帮忙可以吗?
Practice more in the matching tool.
Advanced Mandarin is politeness + precision
Latin-style cognate roots do not apply. Character components and phonetic series are the productive analogue — use the Character Explorer that way. C1-like work needs politeness levels, written vs spoken choices, and a one-month domain focus.
Politeness ladder (same request)
- Too blunt: 帮我!
- Neutral polite: 请问,可以帮我一下吗?
- Formal written: 您好!想请教您一个问题……
Formal decline: 不好意思,这个周末我已经有安排,恐怕没办法参加。如果我们能改到下周,我很乐意支持。 Casual: 这周实在排不开,下周我来帮忙可以吗?
Weekly system
- Native short news segment daily + retell.
- Tone/register pack twice weekly.
- One formal↔informal rewrite.
- Component family deep-dive for opaque advanced words (five characters, not fifty).
Domain month ideas: workplace email, media interviews, or academic reading. Keep a notebook of soft refusals and written openings you actually reuse.
Self-score rubric (every Friday)
- Task (0–2) — answered the brief completely
- Register (0–2) — formality matches the situation
- Collocation / connectors (0–2) — natural glue, not calques
- Control (0–2) — forms stable under time pressure
Aim for 6/8 before increasing difficulty. Below 4/8: repeat the same brief once — do not add new apps.

Worked cycle 1
Complete one media or reading input, one production task with model compare, and one register sprint. Write down a single phrase you will reuse in a real message this week. If you skip the reuse step, the cycle does not count.
Time-box: twelve minutes to draft, three minutes to edit for register only. Speak the final version once. If speech and writing disagree, simplify the written text until both match.

Character precision session
Pick five opaque advanced characters. Map components, invent one sentence each, and reuse them in a formal message rewrite. Quantity is the enemy.
Listening with tasks
CCTV/radio shorts only count with a retell and a politeness rewrite of one line.
Closing practice contract
For the next seven days on mandarin c1 register, complete three finished loops only: input with retell, production with model compare, and a fifteen-minute register or collocation sprint. Write scores in a simple table. If any loop is skipped, restart the seven-day contract rather than stacking guilt. Tools and guides on this site exist to make that loop obvious — not to multiply options.
Sample week schedule
Mon: news short + retell. Tue: register pack 15 minutes. Wed: formal↔informal rewrite of a workplace request. Thu: five-character component deep dive. Fri: record a polite refusal and compare to the model on this page. Weekend: optional GLOSS lesson.
What “good enough” looks like at month’s end
You can open a written message with 您好, decline without blunt 不行, and explain one news flash in plain Mandarin for sixty seconds. Tones on high-frequency verbs are stable enough that a tutor’s corrections shrink week to week.

Request: 请问,可以帮我一下吗? / Decline: 不好意思,我这周已经有安排了。 / Close: 感谢您的理解。 Practice swapping only the reason clause while keeping the soft frame intact. Record all three lines daily for five days.
