About Zulu
- Language family
- Niger-Congo, Bantu (Nguni branch)
- Where it's spoken
- KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
- Speakers
- roughly 12 million native speakers, one of South Africa's 12 official languages
Zulu belongs to the Nguni branch of Bantu languages, close enough to Xhosa, Swati, and Ndebele that speakers can often follow one another's speech. Its click consonants, unusual among Bantu languages generally, were borrowed through long contact with the Khoisan languages of southern Africa. Zulu is South Africa's most widely spoken home language and carries a strong oral praise-poetry tradition tied to Zulu royal history.
