Xhosa is closely related to Zulu within the Nguni branch of Bantu languages, sharing enough grammar and vocabulary for reasonable mutual intelligibility. Like Zulu, it borrowed click consonants from neighboring Khoisan languages, giving it a sound system unusual even among other Bantu languages. It was the mother tongue of Nelson Mandela and remains central to Eastern Cape cultural and literary life.
