Directory 12 resource listings . A short orientation and a solid starting list.
Honest start for Urdu: pick one beginner course or community program from the list, add 10–15 minutes of listening most days, and bookmark one reference. Ignore the rest of the directory until those three habits are alive. Learn the writing system with the script trainer before heavy vocabulary. Use the First 500 trainer for high-frequency words. Urdu and Hindi share essentially the same grammar and everyday spoken vocabulary, to the point that linguists often describe them as one spoken language, Hindustani, split into two written and literary standards. Urdu draws its higher, formal vocabulary from Persian and Arabic and is written right to left in a modified Perso-Arabic script called Nastaliq, in contrast to Hindi's Devanagari. It carries a long, prestigious tradition of poetry, especially the ghazal form associated with Mughal-era court culture.
Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.
