Tamil has one of the longest continuously documented literary histories of any language still spoken today, with the classical Sangam poetry collections dating back roughly two thousand years. Unlike most major Indian languages, it comes from the Dravidian family rather than the Indo-European family that Hindi and Bengali belong to. Its closest living relative, Malayalam, split off from a shared ancestor language roughly a thousand years ago.
