Tagalog forms the grammatical base of Filipino, the Philippines' national language, though it coexists with over a hundred other Philippine languages such as Cebuano and Ilocano. Centuries of Spanish colonization left a heavy layer of Spanish loanwords in everyday vocabulary, and American administration afterward added English borrowings and widespread bilingualism. Its verb system, built around 'triggers' that mark which noun in a sentence is the topic, works quite differently from European languages.
Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.
