Romanian is the only major Romance language that developed in relative isolation from the others, cut off from the rest of the Latin-speaking world for centuries by Slavic- and Hungarian-speaking neighbors after the Roman withdrawal from Dacia. It kept some archaic Latin features other Romance languages lost, while absorbing a substantial layer of Slavic vocabulary. Despite the geographic gap, its core grammar and much basic vocabulary remain clearly recognizable to speakers of Italian, French, or Spanish.
