Norwegian uniquely has two official written standards, Bokmål and Nynorsk, reflecting a 19th-century debate over whether to base the modern written language on Danish-influenced urban speech or on rural dialects closer to Old Norse. It is close enough to Danish and Swedish that Scandinavians often converse across languages without switching. Like Swedish, it retains the pitch-accent distinctions inherited from Old Norse.

Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.

Writing systems

  • Bokmål — The majority written standard on this site (and most learner materials). Closest to written Danish.
  • Nynorsk — The other official written standard, based more on rural dialects. Same spoken continuum — two school/writing norms.
