Directory 13 resource listings . A short orientation and a solid starting list.

Honest start for Nepali: pick one beginner course or community program from the list, add 10–15 minutes of listening most days, and bookmark one reference. Ignore the rest of the directory until those three habits are alive. Learn the writing system with the script trainer before heavy vocabulary. Use the First 500 trainer for high-frequency words. Where it's spoken
Nepal, with communities in Sikkim and Darjeeling, India, and Bhutan
Speakers
roughly 16 million native speakers and 32 million total
Writing
Devanagari

Nepali developed from Indo-Aryan dialects carried into the Himalayan foothills and shares Devanagari script and much basic grammar with Hindi, though centuries of separate development and Tibeto-Burman contact language gave it its own distinct character. It is Nepal's official language and also serves as a lingua franca among the country's more than 120 recognized languages. Its spread into neighboring Indian hill states and Bhutan reflects historical Gorkha-era territorial expansion.

Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.
