Marathi has one of the oldest continuous literary traditions among Indo-Aryan languages, with devotional and courtly poetry dating back close to a thousand years. Its closest relative, Konkani, is spoken along India's western coast and shares much of its grammar. Marathi is written in the same Devanagari script as Hindi and Sanskrit, though with some distinct conventions and vocabulary shaped by the Deccan region's history.
