Hawaiian is part of the Polynesian branch of Austronesian, related to Māori, Tahitian, and Samoan through a shared ancestor spoken by Pacific voyagers over a thousand years ago. It has one of the smallest sound inventories of any language, with just eight consonants and five vowels. Near-extinction after decades of suppression in schools was reversed starting in the 1980s through Hawaiian-medium immersion preschools ('Aha Pūnana Leo), now credited with rebuilding a new generation of fluent speakers.

Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.

How to start

  1. Start with an official community or tribal program from the list below before commercial apps.
  2. Treat the community as the authority on how the language is taught and shared — support their materials first.
  3. Add 10–15 minutes of listening most days — prefer community media when available.
  4. Drill vocabulary with First 500 words.
