Honest start

Modern Greek needs alphabet fluency first; then high-frequency words and audio. Classical Greek is a different sport — do not mix goals in month one.

Month plan

  1. Alphabet via script trainer until decoding is automatic.
  2. First 500 + graded listening.
  3. Spoken survival frames; stress/accent awareness.
  4. Short news for learners before full ERT speed.

Traps

  • Classical materials for a travel/speaking goal.
  • Transliteration comfort.
  • Grammar without retells.

Daily 25-minute template

  1. 5 min — script or pronunciation warm-up.
  2. 10 min — First 500 or topic deck.
  3. 10 min — listening you finish + 30-second retell.

Resource use on this site

Start with one free course from the list below, one listening habit, and one reference. Use on-site tools linked above. Ignore the rest of the directory until those three habits are alive for two weeks.

Progress checks

  • Can you decode the script without romanization?
  • Can you finish a graded clip and retell three facts?
  • Have you spoken — even badly — four times this month?

A solid practice day

Pick five high-frequency words or phrases, say one sentence with each aloud, finish a short graded clip that might contain them, and write a brief diary line. If the clip is too hard, step down one level — don’t open another app.

Greek

Greek is the sole surviving member of the Hellenic branch of Indo-European and has the longest continuously attested written history of any Indo-European language, spanning roughly 3,400 years from Mycenaean Linear B tablets to today. It has no close living relatives; its nearest kin died out in antiquity. Its alphabet, adapted from Phoenician script around the 9th century BC, is the ancestor of both the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets.

Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.
