Finnish belongs to the Uralic family rather than the Indo-European family that most European languages share, making it structurally unrelated to its Scandinavian neighbors despite geographic closeness. Its closest relative is Estonian, and the resemblance is close enough that basic conversation is sometimes possible between speakers of the two. Finnish is famous for extensive noun cases (fifteen in the standard grammar) built through suffixes rather than prepositions.
