Dutch sits between German and English on the West Germanic dialect continuum, sharing heavy vocabulary overlap with both. Dutch settlers carried it to southern Africa in the 17th century, where it developed into Afrikaans through contact with Malay, Khoisan, Bantu, and Portuguese-creole speakers. It remains an official language in the Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, and several Caribbean territories.
