Choctaw is closest to Chickasaw, with which it shares enough grammar and vocabulary that some linguists treat them as a dialect continuum rather than fully separate languages. Most Choctaw speakers today live in Oklahoma, where the Choctaw Nation relocated after the Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced the tribe from its Mississippi homeland along the Trail of Tears. Tribal-run classes and apps are the main path to new fluency now.
Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.
