Catalan is a Romance language centered on Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, and Andorra. It developed from Latin spoken in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula and has a continuous literary tradition from the Middle Ages. Spanish or French cognates help early; Parla.cat and TV3 supply authentic next steps.

Speaker counts are approximate orders of magnitude for learners, not census figures. Family labels follow Glottolog-style classification; vitality notes (when shown) follow UNESCO WAL / Ethnologue-style framing and should be re-checked for program planning.
