A1–A2 starter
Tones early, small character batches, First 500, and free audio-backed course anchors.
What to do this month
- Use FSI / Live Lingua Mandarin as free audio-backed course anchors.
- Work the First 500 Mandarin words alongside tones.
- Keep character batches small — a few new characters a day beats cramming a hundred.
- Use tone practice early so bad habits do not freeze.
A realistic weekly rhythm
- Most days: 10 minutes high-frequency words or roots, then 15 minutes gentle listening you can finish.
- One longer day: invent three sentences from today’s family and re-listen without relying on subtitles.
Keep sessions short enough to finish. A twenty-five minute loop you repeat beats a two-hour Sunday binge you abandon. If a day collapses, restart with listening only — do not punish yourself with a backlog.
Mandarin-specific traps
- Character cram without speaking.
- Ignoring tones until ‘later’.
- Huge SRS decks of rare characters.
- English-only gloss addiction.
Media choice this month
Graded Mandarin video/podcasts; finishable segments.
Output task
Tone practice daily; three spoken sentences from First 500.
Mandarin A1 is a tone+character habit — protect both with tiny daily batches.
Beginner operating system (Mandarin)
Tones + tiny character batches beat cramming. Latin-style cognate roots do not apply — use character components later like root families.
Week-by-week month
- Tone practice daily via quick practice; First 500 recognition
- Free audio-backed course anchors; few new characters/day
- Three spoken sentences/day; graded video finished
- Diary lines; tutor or exchange for tone feedback
我今天学习中文。 我听简单的录音。 我想明天说得更好一点。

A solid practice day
Finish one listening or reading piece you can actually complete. Invent three new sentences from today’s roots or word set. Record a short spoken retell (about a minute). If the input is too hard, step down one level — don’t open another app. Note whether you stalled on vocabulary, grammar frames, or just not wanting to speak. Do this on three weekdays before adding new materials from the resource list.
When tones slip on high-frequency verbs, record ten sentences and re-speak only the verbs. When characters pile up, cut new ones and deepen components for a week. When listening feels fake, use the fifteen-minute listen guide and retell out loud. When speaking stalls, book a short tutor session even if the grammar still feels messy.
