Language family
Constructed (fictional — Star Trek)
Where it's spoken
Fictional (Klingon Empire); real-world fan community
Speakers
hundreds of fluent fans; many more casual learners

Klingon (tlhIngan Hol) is the constructed language developed for Star Trek and expanded by Marc Okrand. It has an unusually complete learner ecosystem for a fictional language — including a Duolingo course and the Klingon Language Institute. Treat it as a fun, structured conlang project; pronunciation and unusual word order take deliberate practice.

How to start

  1. Learn the writing system first with the script trainer — meet a few characters, match them, then recall.
  2. Pick one free course (or free-with-upgrades) below and finish a short beginner unit before hopping apps.
  3. Bookmark one dictionary or grammar reference and look up every unknown word for a week.
  4. Add 10–15 minutes of native listening or learner video most days — news, radio, or a teaching channel.
  5. Drill vocabulary with starter words.
  6. When ready, use a tutor marketplace listing below for short speaking sessions.
