A1–A2 starter

FSI/Live Lingua, First 500, Romance cognate boost, graded listening before RAI speed.

What to do this month

  1. Start with FSI / Live Lingua Italian for structured free drills.
  2. Learn the First 500 Italian words before specialty vocab.
  3. Spanish or French cognates help — notice the Romance overlaps deliberately in the Explorer.
  4. Keep listening graded until RAI-style news no longer feels like noise.

A realistic weekly rhythm

  • Most days: 10 minutes high-frequency words or roots, then 15 minutes gentle listening you can finish.
  • One longer day: invent three sentences from today’s family and re-listen without relying on subtitles.

Keep sessions short enough to finish. A twenty-five minute loop you repeat beats a two-hour Sunday binge you abandon. If a day collapses, restart with listening only — do not punish yourself with a backlog.

Italian-specific traps

  • Assuming Spanish knowledge transfers 1:1 (false friends await).
  • Skipping double-object pronouns until crisis.
  • Native RAI too early.
  • Silent cognate reading without speaking.

Media choice this month

Graded Italian video/podcasts you finish.

Output task

Daily sentences from Explorer; short café dialogues aloud.

Italian beginners with Spanish should keep a false-friend sticky note from week one.

Beginner operating system (Italian)

Romance cognates help — especially if you know Spanish — but false friends start early. Keep a sticky note from week one.

Week-by-week month

  1. FSI/Live Lingua + First 500
  2. Explorer families; café dialogues aloud
  3. Graded listening finish lines; conjugation explorer on high-frequency verbs
  4. Voice note + short exchange; do not jump to full RAI speed
Questa settimana ascolto video facili.
Scrivo cinque frasi ogni giorno.
Voglio parlare di più la prossima settimana.

A solid practice day

Finish one listening or reading piece you can actually complete. Invent three new sentences from today’s roots or word set. Record a short spoken retell (about a minute). If the input is too hard, step down one level — don’t open another app. Note whether you stalled on vocabulary, grammar frames, or just not wanting to speak. Do this on three weekdays before adding new materials from the resource list.

When Spanish bleeds in, keep a one-page false-friend sticky and rewrite one paragraph daily without those traps. When Lei slips, rewrite the email opening before anything else. When listening feels fake, use the fifteen-minute listen guide and retell out loud. When speaking stalls, book a short tutor session even if the grammar still feels messy.
