C1–C2 mastery
Sie/du precision, workplace hedges, collocations, and assessed media retells.
What to do this month
- Follow a weekly media sheet, then retell — not just “listen to Tagesschau.”
- Production: output workshop + assessed C1 tasks (summarize, rewrite, error-correct).
- Drill register, workplace pack, and collocations twice a week.
- Use DLI GLOSS German for denser reading; pick one domain for a month so advanced words cluster.
A realistic weekly rhythm
- Native media daily; structured register or GLOSS work twice a week.
- One domain focus for the month so advanced vocabulary clusters instead of scattering.
Keep sessions short enough to finish. A twenty-five minute loop you repeat beats a two-hour Sunday binge you abandon. If a day collapses, restart with listening only — do not punish yourself with a backlog.
German-specific traps
- Premature du with institutions.
- English collocation calques.
- Passive news habit without summaries.
- Obscure Politik nouns without connectors.
Media choice this month
Deutschlandfunk/Tagesschau shorts with weekly sheets.
Output task
Sie-register emails + soft disagreement scripts + C1 assessed tasks.
German C1 is a register sport: Sie control and soft contrast beat rare vocabulary flexing.
Sie default
Write Sie to institutions until invited; soft contrast in meetings.
Collocation gym
treffen/nehmen/stehen frames twice weekly.
Media
Tagesschau in 100 Sekunden → sheet → retell.

Weekly non-negotiables
- Media sheet (Tagesschau/DLF desks) + retell
- Output email/meeting
- Register + collocations twice
- Assessed task Friday
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, der Bericht verzögert sich um zwei Tage. Ich sende die Vollversion am Donnerstag und stehe mittwochs für ein kurzes Gespräch zur Verfügung. Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Domain month
Arbeit, Politik, or Kultur — four weeks. Academic hedges: German academic course. Deep essay: German C1 register.
A solid practice day
Do three things: listen to or read something and retell it in your own words; write or speak one real-world task and compare it with a model; run a short register or collocation drill. Score yourself on task completion, register, discourse markers, and control. Under 4 out of 8? Repeat the same brief before making it harder. Keep useful phrases in a notebook by situation — emails, meetings, complaints — so the drills show up in messages you actually send.

When cases collapse in speech, drill five give/put frames aloud before new vocabulary. When Sie/du wobbles, default Sie in writing until invited. When listening feels fake, use the fifteen-minute listen guide and retell out loud. When speaking stalls, book a short tutor session even if the grammar still feels messy.
